Experience the Peyto Lake

There’s nothing like looking at the actual Peyto Lake, even though you’ve already seen its incredibly vivid blue hue in a thousand press photos. This is especially true because the viewing site for the lake is elevated several hundred feet above the water. Early in the morning, when the sun first shines on the water and the first tour bus arrives, is the ideal time to explore the lake.

Athabasca Glacier Tour Jasper

The road across from the Icefield Center is within walking distance of the Athabasca Glacier’s tongue, which extends from the Columbia Icefield. You can visit it in an Ice Explorer all-terrain vehicle or on foot. Since it reached the rock moraine on the north side of the road in 1844, it has receded by roughly 2 km. Walk the 1.8 km Forefield Trail from the Icefield Center to its toe (bottom edge), then join the 1 km Toe of the Glacier Trail.

Columbia Icefield

The enormous Columbia Icefield, which covers an area the size of Vancouver and feeds eight glaciers, can be seen midway between Lake Louise Village and Jasper Town. Stretching across the plateau between Mount Columbia (3747m) and Mount Athabasca (3491m), this remnant of the last ice age is up to 350m thick in certain areas. This is also the only part of the icefield that is accessible to serious hikers and climbers.

Visit the Weeping Wall

A few kilometres south of Sunwapta Pass and the Banff–Jasper boundary, this massive rock wall looms over the east side of the Icefields Parkway. It’s a sea of waterfalls in summer, with a veil of dampness created by the tears of liquid that pour from the top. When winter arrives, the water solidifies into a massive sheet of ice. Ice climbers come from all over the world to test their skills on the vertical ice field, which is a popular playground.
